Bakhtin’s prairie painting shows
what bluffs and prairie were,

Victor Bakhtin is a quiet, unassuming man with a loose shock of salt-and-pepper hair. he has led an amazingly busy, interesting life, beginning in central Siberia and migrating to Baraboo 47 years later - and his plans for the future evoke the promise of more to come.

Last Wednesday evening, a reception and banquet attended by around 150 people were held at Papa's Place to promote prairie restoration and to unveil Bakhtin's 4-by-6 foot painting title Sauk Prairie Remembed: A Vision for the Future. It is impressive both in its size and especially its realistic detail. It is painted in glowing acrylic colors and shows the artist's conception of what the 14,000-acre Sauk prairie might have looked like 200 years ago - in the month of July, as Bakhtin pointed out, because of the particular species of prairie plants shown slowering in the picture.
